Hi, all
Thanks a lot for all your help, now, I can load the data from visible
human project by using the volumizer, but ... , I got some problem, it
looks like that the volumizer load some part of the data redundantly, it looks fine
from one side but not from the other, it is hard to describe,
please check
http://borz.agrid.usm.edu/~yimu/q.html
to see the problem. My data is in rgba format.

thanks a lot.
Yi

Hi Yi,

It seems that the data is not being loaded correctly into Volumizer.

1. What is the size of the data set? If you are using 3D tiff, then the
maximum file size would be 2 GB, I think.
2. If it is in some other format, raw binary for example, and the data
size is more than 2 GB, you will need to use 64-bit offsets to
seek/read the data file correctly. See src/lib/loaders/BinLoader.cxx
   for example usage.

Cheers,
Praveen

Hi,

we have found useful information on SGI site, and we notice that SGI
doesn't release any version of Volumizer under linux platform.

So the question is: are out there any SGI tool/API "similar" to
volumizer?
We have to render in a 3D volume about 100 slices (256*256 pixel each)
and each pixel will be a glPoint. Probably we will reduce to 8 pixel
or 27 pixel cube voxels, but we expect that this will require high
computation time. Any suggestion to reduce visualization time? Is this
the right approach to the problem?

Any suggestion on a well supported graphic board (high-end user or pro
class) ?

Hi,

look at http://public.kitware.com/
VTK offers some texture based volume renderers for different platforms
and for VolumPro cards.
Some others may be found on www.tgs.com and on the java web-sites

regards

Paul

The high end Nvidia and ATI Radeon cards support 3D texture mapping in hardware.
Any fo the GEForce4 cards (new one is GEForce FX) can be used to do volume rendering..
You will have to do some work in programming, though, in generating the polygon (texture
coordinates and do the blending. Dont know of an API yet for these platforms..

Hi there,

Volumizer is currently supported and released for IRIX only. If you have
any specific requests for cross-platform availability, please contact the
product manager, Mark Cabrales at cabrales@sgi.com.

There are multiple schemes that can be used to visualize volume data sets.
Volumizer uses 3D texture mapping to do volume rendering using hardware
assisted 3D texture mapping. Alternative techniques like ray casting and
splatting can also be used. You should be able to find more information on
the web about these techniques.

VTK (Visualization Toolkit) from kitware provides support for software ray
casting, 2D texture based volume rendering and support for Volume Pro
boards. There is a VTK class that ships with Volumizer to demonstrate the
use of Volumizer based 3D texture mapping in a VTK application. See
/usr/share/Volumizer2/src/apps/VTK/.

hth,
Praveen

also, take a look at:
http://www.tgs.com/pro_div/oiv_main.htm
i've been told they have a high level OInv volviz class lib that uses
similar methods as volumizer. run's under linux.
'never used it. 'don't know how much it costs.
my speculation is that it would be slow, unless Open Inventor by TGS is
much more highly optimized than SGI OInventor was.

Hi,

There seems to be a bug in the gradient shader with respect to lighting
direction. In particular, specifying a lighting direction with a negative
coordinate does not seem to work. The result is no lighting at all. This
can easily be demonstrated by changing the initial lighting
direction in the GradientShade demo program from

	static float initialDirection[3] = {1.0, 0.0, 0.0};

to

	static float initialDirection[3] = {-1.0, 0.0, 0.0};

which should light from the left

or to

	static float initialDirection[3] = {0.0, 0.0, -1.0};

which should light from below.

I'm using volumizer 2.4.

thanks - jc

Dear All,

I am trying to do stereo using volumizer. Essentially I enable the draw
buffers GL_BACK_LEFT and GL_BACK_RIGHT individually and perform the
rendering. The rendering works fine for GL_BACK and GL_BACK_LEFT. But,
when trying to render in GL_BACK_RIGHT. I get the following error.

vzTMRenderAction: glGetError() returned 1282 in beginDraw

Any ideas ?

Hmm.. the gradient shader might not be handling conversions of values in
the range [-1..1] to [0..1] correctly. Let me look into this in greater
detail and get back to you.

Thanks for pointing this out!

Cheers,
Praveen

Hi Praveen,

When the application calls vzTMRenderAction::beginDraw(), the render
action invokes a glGetError() to 'clear' the GL error flag before calling
other GL routines internally. If the error flag is found to be set, the
render action prints the warning message that you are getting and
continues.

This error could be occuring inside your application or somewhere else
(for example another library that you might be using). The best way to
locate the problem would be to run the application under
ogldebug and enable checking for GL errors!

hth,
Praveen

Hello all,
>From recent communications, I understand that there is interest in Volumizer
on Linux.

I am glad to hear that there is some desire for this cross platform
capability.

While porting Volumizer to Linux is not yet plan of record, it is being
proposed.

I would be happy to hear of any specific input or strong desire to get this
done and which applications are most interested in utilizing Volumizer on
Linux.

Thank you

Hello,

I am beginning a new project using quad buffered stereo in a window
development work with Volumizer on the Octane2 platform (IRIX 6.5.x and
V10 graphics). Do I want to develop using Volumizer 1.2 or Volumizer 2.4?
The online info I have found is unclear to me- stating that Volumizer2.x
is geared toward higher end reality engine type machines...

While I have your attention... if you know of any quadbuffered stereo in a
window examples (with or without using Volumizer) that info would be much
appreciated.

- Pierre

Hi Pierre,

Try downloading and installing Volumizer 2.4. The package should include a
sample viewer application 'volview' which would allow you to do
quad-buffered stereo, etc. You will also need to install OpenGL Multipipe
SDK in order to run volview.

Volumizer 1.2 supports 2D texture based volume rendering, while Volumizer
2.x assumes 3D texture support on the system... and hence 2.x is not
supported on lower end systems like the O2.

Cheers,
Praveen

Hi,

OpenGL multipipe SDK has integrated support for any type of stereo. It is
available as a free download
here : http://www.sgi.com/software/multipipe/sdk/index.html

Once installed, see /usr/share/Multipipe/src/ for code source examples.

Regards,

Davy

Add my vote to the idea of porting Volumizer on Linux.

I think all the reasons that SGI ported Performer to Linux and Windows apply to
Volumizer. I think that would make a statement that SGI is really behind the
Volumizer software product. I think that moving to the other platforms gives a
bigger user base. I think a larger user base helps the sales of the high end
SGI systems by making their desktop work compatible with a large Onyx shared
resource. Everyone prefers to work in their office for development and
testing. When the size of the problem demands it, being able to easily move to
a big Onyx would increases the number of Onyx users.

I'm also a user of the Vizserver product. It is allowing us to share a
Onyx3000 IR4 pipe for development and collaboration. I think having Volumizer
on a Linux platform would be a good step in increasing the number of potential
users for a large shared Onyx. In our case, we could do some development and
testing on a Linux machine of smaller data and then moving to the Onyx3000
(either directly or via Vizserver) for the actual scientific work.

Hello all,

Sounds like a very good idea to port Volumizer2 to Linux. We have several people that are interested in using our volume rendering application, but do not have regular access to big SGI machines. It would be very useful if these users could run our application on smaller machines, with a reduction in performance. It would also make it easier for us developers if we can avoid taking up time on expensive machines during coding sessions.

Oh yeah!

it's really interesting! we develop medical VR software and we are locked to
volumizer for portability. We had to rewrite a lot of code because now we'll
port it to linux x86/Quadro4 platform. Hopefully, with a volumizer2 linux
port, we can still develop our top-level application on our Octane2 and then
port to linux when needed or required. At the moment we are spending a lot of
time finding a good cross-platform volume rendering tool (see other mail from
massicci@bio.dist.unige.it, I'm his tutor :). (the hint for OpenQVis was
really usefl, but the software is really really hard to compile :/ )

Consider that now we can have a board like nV geforce FX or ati radeon 9700
coupled with pentium4 / xeon for a relatively low cost and a possible roadmap
could be a definitive migration to linux/x86 in the mid-long term if we
cannot re-use our code anymore.
Offcourse, SGI still remain leader for high-end applications.

regards and many thanks in interest to linux world.

Ivan
