Guys,

I am trying to integrate Performer2.2.x and Volumizer2.4. I am wanting to
use something like the pfVONode that was in the older version of Volumizer
but I am guessing it has been replaced. If I want to put new imagery on to
an existing volume during runtime, is this still possible? It looks like
that was possible using the pfVONode. If it is possible, how do I go about
it in V2.4?

Hi Kevin,

I am not sure what you mean by 'put new imagery on to an existing volume
during runtime'. If you want to simply reload the rendered volume data at
runtime, you can do so by updating the volume texture data in the pfVolume
node.

The pfVolume node is a wrapper around Volumizer's vzShapeSet class, which
stores a set of volumetric shapes. These shapes contain volume data along
with other rendering parameters and geometry. In order to reload the
volume data, you would need to do something like -

// Update the volume data in this pfVolume with the given data pointer.
void
UpdateVolumeData(pfVolume *pfvol, void *newData)
{
   // Get the shape's parameter "volume"
   vzParameter *param = pfvol->getShape()->
			getAppearance()->getParameter("volume");

   // Cast to volume texture
   vzParameterVolumeTexture *texture = (vzParameterVolumeTexture *)param;

   // Update the volume data with the new data pointer.
   // Volume data would be reloaded by Volumizer in the next draw.
   param->setDataPtr(newData);
}

Hope this helps,
Praveen

Thanks, Praveen. That does help. I am trying to render a time-varying set
of data but can't use the timeVarying sample code for a host of reasons.
So, as a first step, I was going to try just swapping out textures.

Thanks for the help.

Hi, Guys:
 For those stay here for a long time, remember I had problem with loading
the data correctly into the volumizer: to see the problem: please check:
 http://borz.agrid.usm.edu/~yimu/q.html

the dimension of the dataset is: 320x167x856, in rgba mode, so the whole
dataset is about 183M, far less than 2GB, so there should be no problem
associated with the tif data limitation. After I reduced the data
dimension to 130x68x856, I got no problem, even the 150x80 won't work, can
anybody figure out why this happen? I need to display higher resolution
at some point, so please help!

Yi

Hi Kevin,

Invoking render() from the pre-draw callback should not effect you as long
as the rendered objects are not intersecting each other and depth testing
is enabled. Does the shape's geometry have correct geometric location? Are
you using any GL transformations inside render()?

Thanks for the reply, Praveen. I may have told you this in the past, but I
am actually using Vega as my scene generator. Turns out, I had the sort
order selection set up wrong there. After changing that, I have a good 3-D
missile plume. I may be jumping the gun here, but I don't think I am that
far off from giving you a killer success story.

Hi Yi,

The incorrect results seem to be due to some kind of texture data
corruption. This could be due to two possible reasons and you might try
different things to narrow down the issue -

1. The data has not been loaded correctly into Volumizer - Either the TIFF
   file has not been created properly or is not being loaded correctly.
   Try running imginfo on the tiff file and see what you get. Also, it
   might be a good idea to try loading smaller parts of this volume to
   visualize only the sub-volumes in the data which are being corrupted.

2. The data is being corrupted during texture bricking in Volumizer - What
   graphics hardware are you running this on? Try setting the
   VOLUMIZER_DEBUG_LEVEL env variable to 3 and see what bricking scheme is
   being used for the data set. Lastly, try loading this data set in the
   Multi-resolution viewer by running (use an appropriate brick size) -
 volview -module /usr/demos/Volumizer2/lib/libvolviewMR.so -volume ${TIFF}

hth,
Praveen

Hello,

  i'd like to use Volumizer2 and VTK, but there're lot of errors during the
build.
  Here's an example of erreur :

--- vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.o ---
cc-1367 CC: ERROR File = vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.cxx, Line = 161
  A pointer to an incomplete class type is not allowed.

        numClipPlanes = clipPlanes->GetNumberOfItems();
   ....
   lot of others errors like the first one.

  My versions :
  Irix 6.5.18f
  OpenGL Volumizer 2.4 Execution Environment
  OpenGL Volumizer 2.4 Development Environment
  VTK 4.2.n (from sources from cvs)

  Thank you.

Hi Jean-Christophe,

The VTK plug-in was tested with VTK 4.0. Assuming that VTK 4.2 is not
radically different from 4.0, I would imagine that the source should still
compile.

Did you edit the VTK_PATH variable in the Makefile to let the compiler
find the correct header files? For example, if your VTK headers are
installed under /usr/local/include/vtk, you would set VTK_PATH to
/usr/local/include/vtk. You might also need to edit the path on the link
line to point to the VTK libraries.

hth,
Praveen

  Hello Praveen,

  yes i think there's a lot of differences. Examples, in the
vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper.cxx i add these lines :
#include <vtkPlaneCollection.h>
#include <vtkImageData.h>
#include <vtkPiecewiseFunction.h>

  in the vtkViewer.cxx i add this line :
#include <vtkPiecewiseFunction.h>

  but now i've pb in the vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.cxx

--- vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.o ---
cc-1367 CC: ERROR File = vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.cxx, Line = 327
  A pointer to an incomplete class type is not allowed.

     vtkPiecewiseFunction *alpha = volumeProperty->GetScalarOpacity();
                                   ^

cc-1367 CC: ERROR File = vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.cxx, Line = 328
  A pointer to an incomplete class type is not allowed.

     vtkPiecewiseFunction *luminance =
volumeProperty->GetGrayTransferFunction();
                                       ^

2 errors detected in the compilation of "vtkOpenGLVolumeTextureMapper3D.cxx".
*** Error code 2 (ignored)

  and a lot of error after !!!

  Do you think it's possible to work on this ? Is it possible for someone (for
example me !!) to did it work with the last version of vtk ??

  Thank you.

Hi Jean-Christophe,

I made a couple of changes to the VTK sample source and now I am able to
get it working with VTK 4.2.2. The differences to the source code are
minimal (see below for changes to the various sources). I also had to
modify the Makefile to point to the appropriate headers and libraries
under /usr/local. These changes would be included in the next release of
Volumizer (2.5).

Let me know if you still have any issues with this.

Ciao,
Praveen

VTK version 4.2 differs from VTK 4.0 in that a complete cleanup of the
#include headers was done. What this means is that include files that used
to include other #include files no longer do so. This can result in errors
(incomplete types, etc.). The fix is to find the offending class and
include its header. (The reason this was done is because some compilers
were choking on the amount of including going on, and the compile process
was slower than it should have been.)

Thanks very much Praveen, it now works for me. This was very important for a
deal I'm working on.

Subject: [info-performer] Segmentation fault while using pfVolume

Hi,

I want to use Volumizer 2 in a Performer application.
The following lines cause a segmentatio fault:

pfVolume *volume = new pfVolume;
volume->init();
volume->loadFile(volumeFileName);

It occures in the function loadFile in setTravData.

Do I need to add some commands?

Thank you

Hi Simone,

The static pfVolume::init method is used to initialize the pfVolume
'class'. It sets up the memory allocation/de-allocation routines for
Volumizer to use the Performer shared memory arenas.

Try calling pfVolume::init first and then create the pfVolume node and
call any methods on the node. Alternatively, you could call
pfdInitConverter_vz before calling pfConfig and then call pfdLoadFile_vz
to load the data. This is the order used by libpfdu when dynamically
loading data loaders. (See man pfdLoadFile and man pfdInitConverter).

Cheers,
Praveen
