Hi All,

Recently our web release people moved all Surf Zone acounts over to Support
Folio. It looks like there was a temporary issue with Support Folio's
authentication of new accounts, preventing people from being able to
download certain software from the access.sgi.com web site. This issue
should be fixed now. Those with old Surf Zone accounts would not have seen
this issue.

Those running into this problem, please try again and let me know if you
still have issues with this. Mark, thanks for reporting the issue.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Praveen

Hi,

We have the license for Volumizer 2.6 for Linux 32-bit. But that license
didn't work for 2.7 in the same machine -32-bit Linux.

Are we supposed to buy different license to use 2.7?

Thanks,

Ahmet

Hello Volumizers-

It appears that there have been some questions about how to get
evaluation
licenses for OpenGL Volumizer 2.6. I wanted to publish some easy
directions
to help clarify the procedure.

Step 1: Download the IRIX or 32-bit Linux files for OpenGL Volumizer
	URL: http://www.sgi.com/software/volumizer/downloads.html

Step 2: After you download and install the appropriate files, you will
need
to get the evaluation license. This can be found on the SGI Key-O-Matic
web
site: http://www.sgi.com/support/licensing/
Note: This requires that you have a valid free Supportfolio ID.

Step 3: Choose the Operating System you require and the Key Class is
"Eval/Emergency" and press "Get a Key".

Step 4: Follow the directions to get an evaluation license for OpenGL
Volumizer.

The evaluation license is available for 28 days. After this you can get
an
additional evaluation license for 14 days, followed by another 7 day
license. After these three evaluation licenses, it is necessary to
purchase
a full license. For additional information on purchasing, please see
the
OpenGL Volumizer web site:
http://www.sgi.com/software/volumizer/ordering.html

Hope this helps-
Thomas.

Hi Bram, (CC'ing info-volumizer)

Hope you find the following info useful (IOW, hope the following does not
confuse you even more!) -

(Terminology used in subquent text - Multi-pipe system => System with
multiple graphics cards)

> -multipipe

OpenGL Multipipe (http://www.sgi.com/products/software/multipipe/) - OMP is
useful for running "multi-pipe unaware" applications on multi-pipe systems.
This is completely application transparent.

> -multipipe/sdk (which seems to be something different that simply an sdk
>  for the aforementioned multipipe???)

OpenGL Multipipe SDK (http://www.sgi.com/products/software/multipipe/sdk) -
MPK is useful for creating "multi-pipe aware" applications so that they
would run on a multi-pipe system. This is NOT application transparent, hence
you need to modify your application to include MPK calls and link with the
MPK run-time library.

> -monster mode

Monster mode or Database decomposition - When you divide your data set
across multiple graphics pipes to generate partial images on each of the
pipes and then composite these results to generate the final output image.
See figure on http://www.sgi.com/products/software/volumizer/techsum.html
for an example.

> -scalable graphics

The concept of using multiple graphics pipes to do parallel rendering so
that your application's performance improves as you add more graphics pipes
to the system. In order to scale, your application would need to "decompose
the rendering process" among the graphics pipes, so that each pipe only does
part of the rendering. The output of these "decomposed" tasks are "partial
images" generated on each of the pipes, which are then "merged/composited"
to generate the final image. Monster mode decomposition mentioned above is
_one possible_ technique to acheive performance scaling. Others are 2D
(screen) decomposition, DPLEX (time decomposition), etc.

> -compositors

A piece of hardware which implements the compositing operation mentioned
above (the process of taking partial images and putting them back together)
by taking the DVI output from the graphics pipes directly. Alternatively,
the application, could do a glReadPixels to grab the partial images from the
pipes and then do a glDrawPixels to do the final composition. This form of
"software composition" is implemented inside MPK mentioned above.

This is really dependent on what your application is limited by (=> the size
of the data set AND size of the output image). volview is a sample
application which ships with Volumizer. It implements both 2D decomposition
(dynamic screen tiling) and DB decomposition (aka monster mode) using MPK.

2D decomposition would only help if your application is pixel fill limited
(since it divides the number of pixels generated on each pipe). Typically,
volume rendering applications are pixel-fill limited. DB decomposition
however would help with pixel fill limitation AND help scaling texture
memory. e.g. if your data set exceeds 256 MB, it will NOT fit on one
graphics cards' local memory. Hence you will need to do DB decomposition in
order to get maximum performance out of the system. If the data fits on the
local graphics' memory, you might as well use 2D decomposition only, since
it is much easier to implement. DB decomposition requires a lot more work
since you need to divide the data and then composite and blend the images in
a back-to-front sorted order.

The compositor does NOT support DB decomposition. Also, I am not sure how
you would Vizserve the DVI output from the compositor unless you have
special hardware to grab the DVI output. You can implement both 2D and DB
decompositions using software composition techniques mentioned above. If
your application is written using MPK, the composition step comes
transparently since MPK does all the work there. If not, you will have to
implement the glReadPixels/glDrawPixels part of the compositing pipeline
yourself.

Let me know if you have any further questions regarding this.

- Praveen

Subject: [info-performer] SGI terminology

Hi there,

I'm a bit confused about SGI's terminology.
Can someone explain to me how these different technologies relate
to eachother:

-multipipe
-multipipe/sdk (which seems to be something different that simply an sdk
 for the aforementioned multipipe???)
-monster mode
-scalable graphics
-compositors

The reason I'm asking:
We have this onyx4, 8 pipes, 4 compositors, which we want to use
with vizserver.

I need maximum performance to drive a single-windowed volume vis app.
(volumizer based).

Do I deploy the the compositors for this, and do dynamic screen space
division? Would I need to cascade 3 compositors as 4->1 + 4->1 ===> 1 ?
Preferably I would do this without the compositors, as we use compositing
in stereo-mode for 4 cave screens.

Thanks,

  Bram

Ahmet,

I am not sure what the procedure for Volumizer license upgrades is. However
I am pretty sure that you would need a 'different license for 2.7' (and any
subsequent releases) since the licensing code looks for the current version
string for every major release.

Thomas will probably be able to provide more details once he gets back.

Cheers,
Praveen

Hi Praveen:

I see the same problem. I created an account with
surfzone. But when I go to download volumizer from the
website, it would not accept my login/password.

Thanks,
Rahul

Thanks for feedback Praveen.

Ahmet,

I am not sure what the procedure for Volumizer license upgrades is.
However
I am pretty sure that you would need a 'different license for 2.7' (and
any
subsequent releases) since the licensing code looks for the current
version
string for every major release.

Thomas will probably be able to provide more details once he gets back.

Cheers,
Praveen

Hello Ahmet-

Just to add a little further clarification. The way to receive license
upgrades for OpenGL Volumizer is to have a valid OpenGL Volumizer support
contract. If you have a valid support contract you can just call up our
support department and request a new license whenever a new release comes
out.

The alternative is to purchase a new license each time a major release
occurs (2.6 to 2.7 is considered a major release). By having a valid
support contract, you can save a considerable amount of money. For further
details on this, please contact your sales representative who can help
determine the exact savings for you.

Just for additional information, if you purchase a license for version 2.6,
it will work with all minor releases like 2.6.1 or 2.6.2 and so on. You
only need a new license for major releases.

Hope this helps-

Thomas Tannert

Hi Rahul,

I am being able to download the software from the web site without any
issues. I confirmed with the web download people that the issue with new
SurfZone accounts was fixed.

Please retry and if you are still having issues, please send me your login
info in a separate e-mail and I will follow up on this.

Thanks.
Praveen

Hi:

I have a small DICOM Dataset. The files are named as
MR.6801, MR.6803, MR.6805, MR.6809......MR.6889. I
think the transfer syntax is implicit little endian
(the default one in DICOM) and its 16bit BitsStored.

I am trying to open it using the XMLViewer that comes
with Volumizer. I just tried to load one slice and
render the volume (Just for the sake of seeing
something on screen), the XMLViewer application
crashed.It gave an error saying "XMLViewer gave an
error and needs to close". The XML file I used is

VZROOT is defined as an enviornment variable (and is
working for other files such as simple.vz etc).

I am wondering what went wrong. Also how do I load a
series of DICOM slices ?

Thanks,

Hi Rahul,

Are you trying to load this DICOM data using the build vzdicom loader or
using your own loader?

To use the built-in DICOM loader, you do not need to specify the module's
filename. You can simply use something like the following (inline comments
explain each of the fields) -

<vzParameterVolumeTexture name="volume">

    // the following is the file 'pattern' for the DICOM files.
    // %03d is used for 3-digit integer values as in the semantics for
    // printf
    <filename>dicom/picker/I.%03d</filename>
    // in your case, this would be VZROOT/data/dicom/picker-96-6/MR.68%02d

    // use the built-in module - vzdicom.
    <module name="dicom">

        // User-string for optional parameters for the module - options
        // accepted by vzdicom module are exactly the same as the command line
        // parameters of dicomToIFL utility in bin/dicom directory.
        // -s and -e options give the file numbers for the DICOM files
        // these values in conjunction with the filename specified above will
        // be used to get the file names, in this case - I.001, I.002, I.003, ... I.087.
        <userString>-s 1 -e 87 +Wh 1 +obt3</userString>
        // Since your data files are numbered differently (01, 03, 05, 09, )
        // you will probably need to rename them
        // so that the numbering is sequential like the above example.

    </module>
</vzParameterVolumeTexture>

To use your own custom DICOM loader, you will need to use the modules' DLL
name (and not the lib name as you have right now).

 <module name="some_module_name">
    <filename>VZROOT/lib/vzdicom.dll</filename>
</module>

Also, Volumizer prints a bunch of debug messages to indicate what went wrong
during the data load. So if you can run the app from a console (like DOS
prompt or Cygwin prompt), that should help you determine what error actually
occured.

hth,
Praveen

Hi,

I am new to OpenGL's Volumizer, and when I load one of the sample
applications in /src/apps/simple/pguide/, which is glut.cxx on Microsoft
visual studio, it compiles and links without errors, but when I try to
run it, I get the following error:
"You application was not able to obtain a license because the FLEXIm
license manager could not determine where to find the licensing data it
needs".

What does this mean, and how do I run this sample program without
errors? Also do I need this license file for any application I run using
the Volumizer API? Please clarify. Thanks!

Hi,

I am new to OpenGL Volumizer and need some help to get started.
Basically, I have 3D segmented data which is a series of text files
containing integers. Each integer corresponds to a segmented region that
a pixel of an image belongs to, and refers to positions (x, y). The text
file # is the z position.

So, for example, if 3.txt contains integers 1 2 2 3, then this
represents a segmented 2X2 image where each pixel of the image belongs
to the segmented regions 1 , 2, 2, 3 respectively, and the z value for
each pixel (x,y) position is 3. I hope this is clear.

So, is there a way, I can load this data and view the segmented regions
in 3D using the volumizer? Please help, since I'm a newbie. Thanks!

Hi Vidya,

Yes, you need a run-time Volumizer license to run any Volumizer based
application. You can get an evaluation license from the Volumizer web
pages to get started with the sample applications. Thomas had posted instructions for getting a license on info-volumizer (see -
http://els.sgi.com/Archives/info-volumizer/200403/msg00000.html).

  Hi,

  I am new to OpenGL's Volumizer, and when I load one of the sample=20
  applications in /src/apps/simple/pguide/, which is glut.cxx on =
Microsoft=20
  visual studio, it compiles and links without errors, but when I try to =

  run it, I get the following error:
  "You application was not able to obtain a license because the FLEXIm=20

  What does this mean, and how do I run this sample program without=20

using=20
  the Volumizer API? Please clarify. Thanks!

Hi again,

Volumizer requires you to provide the 3D data that needs to be
visualized as one contiguous array of data values. In your case, this
array contains the contents of the images/slices (from your text files)
concatenated in the order of increasing z-position.

In order to visualize the data, you can use one of the following two
approaches, depending on what exactly you want to do -
1. Write a small conversion utility, which will convert your data files
into a 3D TIFF or raw binary file. This can then be loaded into any of
the sample viewer programs that ship with Volumizer, like XML Viewer.
See the converters under src/conv/tiff for a couple of simple examples.
2. Write a data loader, which will load your text files at run-time and
pass them to Volumizer for rendering. There are a bunch of sample data
loaders under src/lib/loaders that you can look at to get started.

The programmer's guide should help you get started with the above to
some extent.

hth,
Praveen

  Hi,

  I am new to OpenGL Volumizer and need some help to get started.
  Basically, I have 3D segmented data which is a series of text files=20
  containing integers. Each integer corresponds to a segmented region =
that=20
  a pixel of an image belongs to, and refers to positions (x, y). The =
text=20
  file # is the z position.

  So, for example, if 3.txt contains integers 1 2 2 3, then this=20
  represents a segmented 2X2 image where each pixel of the image belongs =

  to the segmented regions 1 , 2, 2, 3 respectively, and the z value for =

  each pixel (x,y) position is 3. I hope this is clear.

  So, is there a way, I can load this data and view the segmented =
regions=20
  in 3D using the volumizer? Please help, since I'm a newbie. Thanks!

hi.

this is another DICOM file(s) loading question.
we just activated a 30day eval Volumizer2 linux license and are planning
on wrapping OGL VZ in a Performer geometry node; probably using the example
pfVolume as a guide. we normally deal with a series of DICOM files.
to pull something together in a short time, would it be advisable to just use
the dicomToIFL converter and load the data using IFILoader? is the solution
described below an XML file that would be called directly via
vzShapeSet::load(filename)? and is there another way to load DICOM files
directly?

thanks.

Fred,

Yes, to all 3 of your questions.

You can use dicomToIFL to convert the DICOM series to a 3D TIFF file and
then crate a simple XML file with the data file name of your output TIFF
file.

You can create an XML file and specify the DICOM series in the file (using
a format similar to the command line arguments accepted by dicomToIFL) and
load it directly in pfVolume node. There should be sample DICOM files in
/us/share/Volumizer2/data/XML directory f you are looking for an example.

You can modify pfVolume sources and insert your own DICOM loader (or use
the vzdicom library and DICOMLoader.h header) to load the data.

If I were you, I would try the second option first since it is the most
efficient and fastest to implment. If that dosn't work for some reason,
then try the other two.
